چکیده
Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a staple food crop in Burkina Faso that widely grown the Sahelian and Sudano-Sahelian zones, characterised by poor soil conditions erratic rainfall, high temperatures. The objective of this study was to document farmers’ perceptions prevailing constraints affecting pearl production related approaches manage parasitic weeds S. hermonthica. conducted Sahel, zones North, North Central, West Central Plateau, South Faso. Data were collected through structured questionnaire focus group discussions involving 492 participant farmers. Recurrent drought, hermonthica infestation, shortage labour, lack fertilisers, cash, use low-yielding varieties main challenges hindering areas. majority respondents (40%) ranked infestation as primary constraint production. Respondent farmers reported yield losses up 80% due infestation. 61.4% areas had achieved mean yields <1 t/ha. Poor access cost introduced seed, preferred traits existing reasons for their low adoption, 32% respondents. management options fields included moisture conservation using terraces, manual hoeing, hand weeding, microplots locally referred ‘zaï’, rotation mulching. These techniques ineffective because they do not suppress below ground are difficult implement. Integrated practices employing breeding resistant with aforementioned control measures could offer sustainable solution improved productivity

ABSTRACT Resistance to Striga hermonthica in 274 wild Pennisetum glaucum subsp. monodii and stenostachyum accessions was evaluated at Samanko, Mali in 1997 and 1998, and at Cinzana, Mali and Sadoré, Niger in 1998. Data recorded included number of striga plants per plot at least three times during the season, date of striga emergence, number of Pennisetum plants, Pennisetum anthesis date, and do...

Seasonally dry forests and savannas consisting of sparse tree canopies and dominated by open grassland make up about 16 million square kilometers of tropical land of which only 1 million worldwide remains as natural vegetation (Miles et al. 2006). The remaining seasonally dry regions are cultivated (Williams 2008). Natural vegetation is adapted to the extreme seasonality, characterized by deep ...

The objective of this study was to identify morphological and physiological traits for salinity tolerance in Tunisian autochthonous ZZ pearl millet ecotype (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br) under local conditions. ZZ ecotype was cultivated under different levels of salinity and growth parameters, water relations and mineral content were measured. Results showed that ZZ pearl millet ecotype was un...

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) and napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) are the most economically important species in the genus Pennisetum. Knowledge of genetic diversity of these two species would enhance their potentials for utilization. The present work assessed the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship among Nigerian and Indian accessions of pearl millet an...

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) has potential as a grain crop for dryland crop production in the southeastern United States. Whether or not pearl millet will be compatible in rotation with cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), corn (Zea mays), and peanut (Arachis hypogaea) will depend, in part, on its host status for important plant-parasitic nematodes of these crops. The pearl millet hybrid 'TifGrain...
